  • Engine Oil Temperature — Caterpillar-specific; ADEM2 and ADEM2000 ECMs (common in 3406E, early C15) do not monitor or broadcast oil temp data, leaving the factory gauge dead. Our smart gauge revives this critical readout.
  • Pyrometer (Exhaust Gas Temperature) — Universal for any Caterpillar, Cummins, or Detroit engine in NAMUX1 or NAMUX3 chassis. Factory pyrometers were discontinued after DPF introductions (2008); this kit adds a matching OEM-style gauge with probe for precise EGT monitoring and protection against overheating.
  • Brakesaver Monitoring — Caterpillar-exclusive; monitors oil temperature and application pressure for reliable engine braking performance.
  • Auxiliary Transmission Oil Temperature — Compatible with any engine when adding an auxiliary transmission alongside the main unit; essential for multi-transmission setups in heavy-duty applications.

Getting Your Dash Talking to the New Engine Again

After an engine swap, certain factory gauges on Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks often stop working because the new ECM does not broadcast the data the original gauge expects. Our smart gauge kits restore accurate, OEM-style monitoring that matches the rest of the dash in appearance and function.

Here’s where the main gaps occur:

Engine Oil Temperature (CAT only)

Most Peterbilt and Kenworth trucks have a factory oil temp gauge. However, CAT ADEM2 (40-pin 3406E and C12) and ADEM2000 (70-pin single-turbo C15 and C12) engines do not monitor or transmit oil temperature at all - there is simply no signal coming from the engine. ADEM3 and ADEM4 engines corrected this. Our Engine Oil Temp gauges are specific to NAMUX1, NAMUX2, or NAMUX3 and are not interchangeable between generations. If you install an ADEM2 or ADEM2000 engine into a truck that has a factory oil temp gauge, that gauge will go dead.

Pyrometer / Exhaust Gas Temperature

These kits work with CAT, Cummins, or Detroit engines. They are NAMUX-specific, and we do not offer a version for NAMUX2 trucks because the NAMUX2 CECU does not have an Exhaust Temp parameter available. Factory pyrometer gauges were discontinued starting with 2008 models.

Brakesaver Oil Temperature & Application Pressure

These kits are only for Caterpillar engines equipped with a Brakesaver. They do not apply to Cummins or Detroit applications.

Auxiliary Transmission Oil Temperature

Needed only when an auxiliary transmission is installed in addition to the main transmission (common in heavy-haul and specialized applications).

All of our smart gauge kits use genuine OEM-style gauges that match the face, display, and backlighting of the rest of the dash. They daisy-chain into the existing J1939 network just like the factory gauges. After installation, most setups require ESA software (the proprietary Peterbilt/Kenworth tool) for final configuration.

Shop Reality: A Peterbilt running NAMUX3 came in with a dead oil temp gauge after a Cat swap. The tech assumed a bad sensor and spent half a day chasing wiring before realizing the ECM generation simply wasn't broadcasting that parameter at all. Digital smart gauges matched to the ECM generation would have solved it from the start.

How to Identify Your NAMUX Generation Before You Order

Every smart gauge kit is built for a specific NAMUX generation. Ordering the wrong one is the most common reason a kit fails to integrate properly with the cab. Here’s a quick reference:

  • NAMUX1 – Typically 2006–2007 model year trucks. These came from the factory with Cummins EGR or Caterpillar twin-turbo engines.
  • NAMUX2 – Typically 2008–2010 model year trucks. These added DPF filters on top of the previous emissions equipment.
  • NAMUX3 - Typically 2011 and newer trucks. These added a DEF system in addition to the earlier emissions components.

Important Notes on Model Year

The year on the door sticker is not always the calendar year the truck was built. As a general rule, trucks built after roughly April of a given year are considered the next model year. The most reliable way to confirm is the 10th digit of the VIN, which follows the standard 30-year rotating code for model year.
